The Leaf

by T. Gene Davis

The red leaf floats down the stream. It bumps and wobbles over rocks and minuscule currents. A fly lands on the leaf.

Why does the fly land on the leaf? It could not possibly enjoy the ride, but still it is there, and the red leaf with brown edges floats on, bobbing and twisting.

A small fish tries to eat the fly that has landed on the recently fallen red leaf with brown edges that floats emotionlessly down the water's path. The water ripples and the leaf bobs and flips over revealing yet another red side with brown edges. This side curls down instead of up as if embracing the water that carries it.

The fly buzzes around the leaf, then flies off and out of sight as I sit watching on the bank of the stream under the tree that dropped the little red and brown leaf.

The tree's loss is my gain.
